A High School Musical of the Odyssey  ·  Part One of Two

NOBODYLOSES!

A boy who can’t be caught takes the long way home — and loses everything he was running toward.

The Trojan War is a Friday-night football game. The hero is Ozzy — a wide receiver so shifty they call him “Nobody,” because nobody can catch him. He wins the game with a trick play (the Horse), turns down the after-party, and points himself home to his girl, Penny, and the porch light she keeps burning.

Then he takes the long way. Just to see the sights. And the long way takes him — through a one-eyed barista he never should have crossed, a house full of party crashers he leaves undefended, a BBQ pitmaster, an underworld, a red-light district, and a girl with a leaf who makes him forget he was ever anybody’s at all.

Part One: Nobody Loses.  →  Part Two: Nobody Wins.  ·  the name spans the whole sentence.

Act One

Nobody Can’t Catch Me

the flex — and the flaw

  1. 1

Nobody Can’t Catch Me the book ▸

Ozzy & the team · the game, the trick play, the nickname is born — the swagger, and under it the ache (“is anybody there?”)

  2. 2

A Pretty Penny (Is Waitin’ at Home for Me) the book ▸

Ozzy · the locker room; he skips the party for home — the porch light, lit

  3. 3

Taking the Long Way Home the book ▸

Ozzy & the crew · the parking lot; he chooses to cruise — the flaw: horizon over porch light

  4. 4

I Have My Eye on Nobody but You the book ▸

Penny & Athena (split duet) · home, and Beverly Hills — the “eye” as love; little brother Telly at Penny’s side

  5. 5

I Hate a Nobody Like You the book ▸

Poly & Ozzy, w/ the crew · the Cyclops as a coffee-cave tyrant — a Master-of-the-House con, the name-trick blinding, the shrugging street; the manhunt seeded (the Chief is Poly’s dad)

  6. 6

Everybody Wants Nobody the book ▸

Tony, Ricky & the suitors, w/ Penny · the rager; the house under siege; the “eye” turns to threat

Act-One curtain. The rager peaks at Nobody’s own front door — Everybody inside, Penny cornered, the eye that meant love now aimed like a threat — while across town Nobody clicks his blinker and takes the long way, certain no one can catch him. He’s right. No one can catch him. That’s the whole problem. Houselights up.

Intermission
Act Two

The Long Way Down

the descent to the pit — and the light goes out

  1. 7

Hungry Like Nobody the book ▸

Ozzy & Circe · Circe’s BBQ; the crew turned to pigs; the seam between the man and the meat

  2. 8

I Need Nobody (Like Somebody I Know) the book ▸

Telly · the Telemachy launches — the little brother sets out into the night to find him

  3. 9

Nobody Loves Me? / I Have You, Nobody the book ▸

Aggie & Athena (twin song) · the Underworld (a spotless Subway); Aggie is the flaw’s ghost — did the same, lost all love. The midpoint rebuke.

  4. 10

Nobody Seen Nobody (Around Here) the book ▸

Telly & the party · the search hits the dance floor; the clue — “you gotta be nobody to find nobody”

  5. 11

Everybody’s a Fool in the Champagne Room the book ▸

Ozzy, Calypso & the crew · the red-light district; he forgets Penny; Calypso takes him home; the crew captured. The porch light goes dark.

  6. 12

I’m Making This for Nobody (Nobody Come Home Soon) the book ▸

Penny · the shroud — she stalls the suitors, unpicks the work by night; holding the line at a dark porch

  7. 13

Nobody Is Higher Than Me the book ▸

Ozzy · Calypso’s place; the “leaf”; the haze — rock bottom. In the fog, he is no one.

Curtain — end of Part One. Everyone, apart, in the dark. The crew caged. Penny at a porch whose light has gone out. Telly still searching the night, empty-handed. And Nobody — highest of all, lowest of all — forgetting, in the haze, that he was ever anybody’s. The one thing the whole town swore could never happen has happened. Someone caught the uncatchable man. It was himself.

End of Part One

Nobody Loses.

Blackout.  —  Come back tomorrow night for the light.

The Engine

The Nobody pun: nickname → curse → the name he loses in the haze The eye: love → watch → threat The porch light: lit → dimming → out Two odysseys, diverging (Ozzy down, Telly out) The flaw → its ghost (Aggie) → the pit
